To Deaf And Day with Glaare - An Interview

***** Interview with Glaare *****

Q. When did Glaare start? Tell us about the history...
R: Glaare started in late 2012 when Brandon and I were first dating and neither of us were making music. We didn't have any equipment or money, so I traded a few ounces of weed for a drum kit. Cameron (who didn't have any equipment either) stepped in shortly thereafter. Glaare's early years were spent battling a terminal identity crisis that nearly ended us on a few occasions. I'd say we've only figured ourselves out within the last year. I'd like to mention that before starting Glaare, the three of us had just crawled out from under the crushing weight of long-term drug addiction and substance abuse. Glaare has played a huge role in our recovery and I prefer to not dwell on where we'd be without it.

Q: Who are your influences?
R: Jesus. He's been the most negative influence in my life, but also the most significant.

C: Anyone who gets it right by doing it wrong.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
R: "Talking Timbuktu" - Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder, "Fun House" - The Stooges, "Deathcrush" - Mayhem, "Sweet Tea" - Buddy Guy, "Disintegration" - The Cure

C: "Music Has The Right To Children" - Boards Of Canada, "Rollercoaster" - Red House Painters, "Chorus" - Lovesliescrushing, "F#A#oo" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor, "Formless" - Gridlock

Q. How do you feel playing live?
R: Extreme anxiety, crippling dread, and the anticipation of a catharsis that constantly eludes me.

C: There are so many variables involved that can make or break the experience. Ultimately, the mysterious exchange of energy between ourselves and an audience is crucial to continuing on this path so I am always grateful for anyone who comes to see us.

Q. How do you describe Glaare sounds?
R: The black hole in the back of your mind.

C: Sarah Connor's dream in Terminator 2.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
R: Recording and completing "To Deaf And Day" was a wildly discouraging and nauseating experience. We kept hitting obstacle after obstacle, like we were banging our heads against a wall. It still doesn't feel over.

C: This record wanted to exist. It bore into the three of us until we had nothing left to give.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
R: Sextile and Human Leather.

C: Not really new bands, but I am looking forward to the new Blut Aus Nord, Throane, and Wormlust records. I've always got my eye on Northern Electronics, Hospital Productions, and Fallen Empire. And I'm still waiting for "Dear Tommy."

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
R: Junior Kimbrough, Buddy Guy, Bjork, Kate Bush, Tupac, Burzum.

C: Primitive Radio Gods - "Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand"

Q: What are your plans for the future?
R: I want to fuck up as many peoples' lives as possible. I want them all to remember the day that they made the mistake of seeing us perform and realized they could no longer lie to themselves anymore.

C: We've started writing our next LP and look forward to playing a lot in 2018. I'd really like an excuse to go back to Iceland, so if anybody there wants to book us, we are down and make wonderful houseguests. Same goes for all of Europe, really.

Q: Any parting words?
R: Drop Topo Chico.

C: Thank you for taking an interest in what we do.
